Whajalu Wangga/Campfire Talk (1)

The preparation and sharing of food have traditionally been women’s domain, in the kitchen or by the campfire. My Mum Colleen Drage would say ‘The campfire is our kitchen’; she is a Nhanda Elder who grew up on Murchison House Station and on the banks of the Murchison River.
Printed with message stick designs referring to significant sites across Nhanda country, the 3 textile ‘poles’ are a reference to women’s role at the centre of family. It also takes us back to the historical past where my grandmothers and many Aboriginal women worked in station and institutional kitchens. Here the talk between women as they wash, clean, and dry again is about Country. Stories of resilience, renewal and of Culture pass between women as they work, nourish and persevere.
