Christobell Protty is a Pitjantjatjara artist with connections to Tjukurla and Kaltukatjara (Docker River). She was born in Utju (Areyonga) before
traveling to Kaltukatjara with her family as a child. Christobell paints important Tjukurpa (Dreaming stories) at multiple sites in the Kaltukatjara
region, including Ontulu and Tjitji Ngatingka. She is a consistent presence in the art centre, working almost daily on her detailed, layered canvases, which
crackle with energy and dynamic forms.
Christobell’s family has lived and traveled in the Kaltukatjara area for generations, and her paintings are a tribute to her significant cultural and
historical contributions to her community. Her mother, Martha Protty Kanitja, a senior law woman and traditional owner of the Kaltukatjara area,
has passed on her love of country, inma (ceremonial singing), and artmaking. For Christobell, the spiritual and physical worlds are constantly
connected, and her rhythmic, colourful, and energetic canvases reflect her love for ngura (country).
