Lyall Giles is a Traditional Owner of Tjukurla, WA, and the surrounding area. As a senior leader and respected wati (man) in Tjukurla, he holds extensive knowledge of Tjukurrpa (the Dreaming).
For a long time, he shared these stories verbally, but only recently began painting them. Lyall has embraced painting with enthusiasm and natural skill. His mother, Nyarapayi Giles, was a
prominent figure in the contemporary Western Desert painting movement, and he carries strong Tjukurrpa from both his mother's and father's families. He started by painting the story of Warmurrungu, a
ceremonial ochre-gathering site in the Gibson Desert near his mother's birthplace. Now, with many stories to share, he has begun expanding his subjects.
“There are so many stories. There are rocks and trees for all the animals. They turned to rocks a long time ago, when I was nothing, when my father was nothing, when my grandfather was nothing—all the
way back. Before the white man was here. Thousands of years ago.
